Foreign & local investors are happy with the Penang's security capability. State local govenrment, traffic management, Information & Community Relations Committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said after last year's heist at Second Air Cargo Complex in Batu Maung, security had been tightened in the free commercial zones & the Penang International Airport. "The police & the Customs have beefed up the security system at these locations. "But we still have to keep improving & be aware that anything can happen especially when all sorts of valuable products are being manufactured from here," he said. In November 2006, RM47 million worth of computer microchips & motherboards were stolen from the complex. "After the heist, a taskforce was set up to address security problems. The state govenrment & the State Secretary also meet with the people from the industry regularly to discuss security issues," he said after opening the ISO 28000 Security Management in the Supply Chain: Towards a Safe & Secure Business Environment seminar that was organised by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) and VA Partners Sdn Bhd at Cititel Hotel. He described the seminar as timely with Penang being designated as a transport & logistics hub for the northern Corridor Economic Region(NCER). "Security management in the supply chain business is a great concern of many in the industry. With products worth millions manufactured & transported everyday in the free commenrcial & industrial zones, we do not want aother heist to happen. "If Penang does not have good security systems, investors will not come even if we have the best infrastructure," he added. The speakers at the seminar were LRQA Asia Security Management System, senior business manager Peter Boyce & CID Senior Asst Comm Datuk Shariffuddin Abdul Ghani. About 90 participants from the supply chain business attended the seminar.
