Why do we have this course?

An increasing number of organisations have adopted or are adopting formal management systems standards including ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

Often these are implemented as independent systems and may be implemented alongside an ISO 9001system. However, many organisations are actively considering integrating the systems and as a result are considering, integrated internal audits. Such organisations tend to have a pool of trained and competent Quality Management System (QMS) auditors and are considering how they might use such auditors to audit an integrated system covering QMS, EMS (Environmental Management Systems) and OH&SMS (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems). Or are considering training new auditors to carry out audits of an amalgamated EMS and OH&SMS system, or indeed training a combination of QMS auditors and people new to auditing.

This course will provide delegates with knowledge and skills to enable them to carry out internal audits, in combination or as stand alone systems, of both an EMS against the requirements of ISO 14001and OH&SMS against the requirements of OHSAS 18001.

Delegates will gain knowledge of the business benefits of implementing an EMS and an OH&SMS as well as a background to both standard and basic requirements of EMAS.  In addition delegates will learn essential definitions to interpret and audit ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 requirements, the purpose, intent and key requirements of the two standards as well as similarities and differences between the standards and how they link to ISO 9001.

With respect to auditing delegates will acquire knowledge of: the internal audit requirements of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 roles and responsibilities of internal auditors how to plan audits by developing effective checklists how to verify that current practice in an organisation conforms with defined requirements how to gather objective evidence through observation, interviewing and sampling of documents and records how to report findings accurately how auditing for conformity can improve the stability and robustness of management systems how auditing for effectiveness can make a significant contribution to continual improvement what corrective action is and who is responsible for taking such action how to follow up and verify the effectiveness of corrective action taken

The course is designed principally for individuals who will be involved in the maintenance of integrated Environmental and OH&S Management Systems through internal auditing, but also would provide an insight into the requirements for the two systems for those who are or are about to be involved in establishing, maintaining and/or combining such systems.

Delegates’ knowledge and skills are developed through an interactive and practical approach to tasks and audit activities. The course is delivered by tutors who are experts in management systems auditing and experienced in training.

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate providing evidence, to employers, auditor certification bodies and systems certification bodies, of their training

Target audience

Public events

This course is designed for groups of individuals requiring the knowledge and skills necessary to interpret the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards in the context of internal auditing. The course is suitable for any individual with little or no working knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 and/or has little or no experience of auditing.

The course would also provide an excellent audit refresher for experienced QMS auditors, together with full insight into the requirements of an EMS and an OH&SMS, thereby assisting them in becoming ‘integrated systems’ internal auditors.

Attendees would be predominantly those individuals responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining an EMS and an OH&SMS (or a combination of the two) and conducting EMS and/or OH&SMS audits (separately or as part of integrated systems).

Attendees must be aware that whilst fundamental environmental and OH&S legal requirements are introduced as part of the course, the course is not intended to provide knowledge and understanding of all legal requirements that may be applicable to their organisation. a basic understanding of environment and health and safety issues before attending this course would be advantageous, but is not essential. to have conducted internal audits in any of the following disciplines: quality management, health and safety and/or environment would equally be advantageous, but is not essential. Client profile Individuals wanting to develop their own skills.

Organisations that have implemented or are about to implement an EMS and a OH&SMS with a number of people they wish to develop and to equip with the knowledge and skills in order to conduct internal EMS and OH&SMS audits.

In-company events

This course is designed for groups of individuals requiring the knowledge and skills necessary to interpret the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards in the context of internal auditing. The course is suitable for any individual with little or no working knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 and/or has little or no experience of auditing.

Attendees would be predominantly those individuals responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining an EMS and an OH&SMS (or a combination of the two) and conducting EMS and/or OH&SMS audits (separately or as part of integrated systems).   An in- company event can include (customised or bespoke options) an introduction to environmental/OH&S legal requirements related directly to the organisation.

The EMS/OH&S case study used for the audit can be replaced by either “live auditing” of your organisation’s system or replaced by a role play designed around and based on your existing system.   Throughout the course reference can be made to the organisations EMS and OH&SMS and specific documents and records within them.

Delivery in this manner can help to maintain consistency amongst auditors with regards to audit skills, judgement (i.e. interpretation of requirements) and report writing. Client profile Organisations that have or are about to implement an EMS and/or an OH&SMS with a pool of individuals or QMS auditors (or combination) that they wish to train as EMS/OH&SMS auditors.
